From “no sperm” to a healthy baby girl – An azoospermia success story

Having been told they had “no sperm” (azoospermia) this couple felt no hope, but with the right changes and specialist help they went on to have a healthy baby girl.

When this couple came to see us, they were trying to conceive their second child.
Their first pregnancy had happened naturally, so this time around felt confusing and unexpected. Month after month passed with no success, and they began to feel the quiet frustration and uncertainty that so many couples experience.

They decided to have some tests done.
That’s when they received the difficult result… there was no sperm present.

As you can imagine, this came as a huge shock. Nothing in their previous experience had prepared them for this, and suddenly the path forward felt very unclear.

Looking beyond the result of “no sperm”

This is where we started working together, with a Fertility Investigation Consultation. Rather than stopping at the diagnosis, we took a step back and looked more closely at the full picture.
What we found was that his testosterone levels were actually too high, which was suppressing FSH (the hormone needed to support sperm production).

This wasn’t something that had been fully explained to them or checked for before.
When we explored further, it became clear that he had been taking a number of supplements to support weight training. He was also regularly using saunas and steam rooms, both of which can impact sperm health. These are the kinds of factors that are often overlooked, but can play a significant role.

Supporting both partners in the fertility journey

At this stage, it would have been easy to focus only on the sperm result, however fertility is never just one-sided.
He was referred to a urologist for medical support and began appropriate treatment, while we worked alongside this with acupuncture.

At the same time, we supported his partner too.
We focused on improving egg quality and reducing inflammation through reflexology, acupuncture, and nutritional changes. Because even when there are challenges with sperm, the quality of the eggs can still make an important difference, and help to ‘fix’ some issues with the sperm.

A different outcome to what they expected

Initially, they were told that they may need to have sperm surgically extracted in order to proceed with IVF.
This is often presented as the next step and a good option when sperm is minimal or compromised, but sperm is often less mature and not as high quality through this route. If it can be retrieved by ejaculate this is the preferred, and as their situation evolved, the surgical extration wasn’t necessary.

They were able to move forward with IVF and created four embryos.
They became pregnant and went on to have a healthy baby girl!

What’s important about this journey is not just the outcome, but how the path unfolded.
They were given a very worrying result, but that result was only one piece of a much bigger picture, and things did change. With sperm results in particular, results can change from one test to another. Sperm is produced in 3 monthly cycles, so with work it can be improved in that time.

By taking the time to understand the underlying factors, and by supporting both partners, they were able to move forward with more clarity and more options than they initially thought.

Being told there is no sperm can feel overwhelming.
But with the right investigation and support, there may be more to explore, and more options available to you.
And sometimes, more possibilities than you realise at the beginning.
